If Crossrail’s proposals are accepted, large sections of the town including the Centre Court Shopping Centre and the Everyday Church, as well as some shops and bars near The Piazza, may be demolished to make way for a dynamic transport hub: offering opportunities for large scale improvement and development in Wimbledon town centre.

Wimbledon’s railway station will be enlarged to allow thirty Crossrail 2 trains per hour to pass through, and four extra railway platforms will be created to cater for the expected 3,000 additional peak time commuters using the station. A large site on the Weir Road industrial estate will also be developed for the parking, cleaning and maintenance of trains together with another large site needed to allow trains to reverse.

London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, has predicted that Crossrail 2 will bring major economic benefits to the capital: “Crossrail 2 will be a vital new transport link that will significantly improve capacity on the rail network into and out of London. It will also provide a major boost for jobs, new homes and economic growth here in the Capital and far beyond.

As Crossrail 2’s plans roll out it is inevitable that even greater demand will be placed on south west London’s corporate lettings market, as companies involved in creating the new infrastructure - together with those hoping to benefit from increased investment in Wimbledon – compete for available properties.

Last month residential property expert Sophie Chick commented on the growth in corporate lettings in south west London, saying: “We have already seen a significant increase in the demand for corporate rentals in Battersea, Clapham and Wandsworth over the past year”. She added: “The boundaries of the prime markets within the [south west] area are continuing their expansion, often led by development.
